Whatever, you can do what you want

A new prose and poetry open mic has been founded by two of our past Quickies! readers.

Dave Snyder and Chris Bower have started the Chinaski's Literary Open Mic.

The reading series is every Wednesday night at 8pm at Chinaski's (1935 N Damen) in Bucktown. (Sign up to read begins at 7:30pm.)

I went to (and participated in) the reading last week and had a blast! They have a stage! And a podium! And a spotlight! It feels like you're real important and fancy.

Check it out!

Daniel Day-Lewis and the Big Potatas

Just wanted to alert any readers we have that there's a very hilarious play currently playing at the Prop Theatre through August 8, "Daniel Day-Lewis and the Big Potatas." It's written by SAIC alum Rory Jobst, and is impeccably acted by Marisa Plumb and Kate Teichman. I didn't know what to expect going in, and I was more than pleasantly surprised. I can't overstate how funny it is.

And, perhaps just as great as the play itself, Rory has instituted opening readings before each play called "Run-ins" that feature a number of past Quickies! readers (Mary Hamilton, Josh Amidon, Toby Bengelsdorf...the list goes on).

So if you've got a spare hour on a Thursday or Friday night, you could do a lot worse then to go on down to the Prop Theatre and check it out. Do it!

You can keep on your hat, cuz we've got Matt!

MATT TEST

Matt Test is a writer, theatre maker, theater go-to-er, musician, and sound artist. He's worked with The Curious Theatre Branch, the Mill Theatre, Illegal Drama, American Theatre Company, Prop Theatre and Stillpoint Theatre Collective, among others. He somehow managed to weasel his way into the Whitney Biennial, which sounds more high falutin' then it is but falutin' enough to mention. He is a company member with the Curious Theatre Branch and one third of the Crooked Mouth String Band, with Beau O'Reilly and Troy Martin.

How do you find a word that means Maria? A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!

MARIA PARROTT

Maria Parrott is a recent graduate of the MFA in writing program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since graduating, Maria has spent her days waking up early to alternately work on her novel/stare slack jawed at the computer screen until she has to go to work for eight hours.

It's the truth, you'll kick yourself if you miss Amy Guth

AMY GUTH

Amy Guth is the founder of Pilcrow Lit Fest, host of Chicago's Fixx Reading Series and author of Three Fallen Women (So New Media Publishing, 2006), all of which she is often touring around to promote, as well as a forthcoming second novel, Light of Waters. Previously, she has written for The Believer, Monkeybicycle, Ninth Letter, Four Magazine, Bookslut, The Complete Meal and Outcry, among others. Once upon a time, she collaborated on a few sketch comedy productions at The Second City's training center and was also fumbling around a few improv comedy stages, and fondly recalls the nights she played the "Kill Whitey" crayon and the night she improvised doing improv-coke off of an improv-hooker.
